It is advisable for university students to have the knowledge of how to calculate CGPA, this will help them to track their performance along their university academic journey.
All university students want to come out with first class honour, in doing that they need to know how to calculate their CGPA right from first year. You don’t need to be a graduate before you know your final year CGPA.
In this post, you will find out how to calculate GPA, as well as how to calculate CGPA.
Most universities, globally make use of CGPA to track students performance in the University.
But first we need to understand what CGPA and GPA are.
What is GPA?
GPA stands for grade point average. It is the grade point of your first and second semester results.
You need to know the score you got for each of your courses and also the credit unit for each courses to calculate the GPA of either semester.
Don’t worry, keep on reading, you will find out the meaning of what i am saying and also how to calculate your GPA and CGPA.
What is CGPA?
CGPA stands for cumulative grade point average. It is the summation of your first and second semester GPA then divide it by 2.
Well with these definitions I guess you should know how to calculate your CGPA and GPA by now.
However, I will show you with examples how to calculate your GPA and also how to calculate CGPA.
How to calculate GPA
GPA is calculated by adding by dividing the Total Quality point (TQP) for the semester by the Total Credit Unit (TCU) for that semester. Don’t worry, I will explain what I mean by using an example.
To calculate your GPA, you need to follow these steps thoroughly.
Academic performance are graded from A to F. A particular grade point is assigned to these grades.
Mark/Score (%) | Grade | Grade Point (GP) |
70 to 100 | A | 5.00 |
60 to 69 | B | 4.00 |
50 to 59 | C | 3.00 |
45 to 49 | D | 2.00 |
40 to 44 | E | 1.00 |
0 to 39 | F | 0 |
Grade | Remark |
A | Excellent |
B | Very Good |
C | Good |
D | Pass |
E | Fair |
F | Fail |
Every Course/subject/module in the university carries a fixed number of Credit Units (CU). Quality points (QP) are derived from multiplying the Credit Units (CU) for a course by the Grade Point (GP) earned by the student in that course.
For example: If in a 3 Credit Unit course, a student scores 63% which is a B with a Grade Point (GP) of 4, the Quality Points (QP) for the student in that course is 3 x 4 = 12.
Grade Point Average (GPA) is derived by dividing the Total Quality point (TQP) for the semester by the Total Credit Unit (TCU) for that semester.
Example: If in a semester, a student earned 67 Quality Points for 18 Credit Units
Course Code | Credit Unit (CU) | Grade | Grade Point (GP) | Quality Point (QP) = CU x GP |
MTH 101 | 4 | C | 3 | 3×4= 12 |
SOC 102 | 2 | C | 3 | 2×3= 6 |
PHY 104 | 3 | B | 4 | 3×5= 12 |
CHM 104 | 4 | B | 4 | 4×4= 16 |
BOT 101 | 3 | A | 5 | 3×5= 15 |
ZOO 101 | 2 | C | 3 | 2×3= 6 |
Total | 18 | 67 |
GPA = QP/CU = 67/18= 3.72
The students GPA is 67/18 = 3.72.
The way this GPA above was calculated, that is how you will calculate GPA of both first and second semesters.
Now let us look at how to calculate CGPA
How to calculate CGPA
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is derived by adding the Total Quality Points (TQP) for all semesters to date and dividing by the Total Credit Units (TCU) for all semesters to date or the addition of your first and second semester GPA then divide it by 2.
For you to know how to calculate CGPA, you will need to first get the GPA of both first and second semesters.
Example;
If a student earns a Quality Point (QP) of 67 for 18 Credit Unit (CU) in the first semester and earns QP of 70 for 21 CU in the second semester.
Let us assume these are your First semester courses, grades and GP
Here the Quality Point (QP) is 67 and Credit Unit (CU) is 18
Course Code | Credit Unit (CU) | Grade | Grade Point (GP) | Quality Point (QP) = CU x GP |
MTH 101 | 4 | C | 3 | 3×4= 12 |
SOC 102 | 2 | C | 3 | 2×3= 6 |
PHY 104 | 3 | B | 4 | 3×5= 12 |
CHM 104 | 4 | B | 4 | 4×4= 16 |
BOT 101 | 3 | A | 5 | 3×5= 15 |
ZOO 101 | 2 | C | 3 | 2×3= 6 |
Total | 18 | 67 |
And also,
Let’s assume these are your Second semester course, grades and GP
Here the Quality Point (QP) is 70 and Credit Unit (CU) is 21
Course Code | Credit Unit (CU) | Grade | Grade Point (GP) | Quality Point (QP) = CU x GP |
MTH 201 | 4 | C | 3 | 3×4= 12 |
SOC 202 | 3 | C | 3 | 3×3= 9 |
PHY 204 | 4 | C | 3 | 4×3= 12 |
CHM 204 | 4 | B | 4 | 4×4= 16 |
BOT 201 | 3 | B | 4 | 3×4= 12 |
ZOO 201 | 3 | C | 3 | 3×3= 9 |
Total | 21 | 70 |
Therefore, his CGPA is TQP/TCU = (67 + 70) / (18 + 21) = 137/39 =3.51
Where TQP is the Total Quality Points and TCU is the Total Credit Unit.
Or
Calculate the GPA of First semester and Second semester, add them together and divide it by 2.
Using the same example;
First semester GPA= 67/18= 3.72
Second semester GPA= 70/21= 3.33
CGPA= 3.72+3.33/2= 7.05/2= 3.53
You have known how to calculate CGPA. Assuming you are in your final year, what will be your CGPA?
Let us look at how to calculate Final year CGPA
How to calculate final year CGPA?
The final year CGPA is the addition of your CGPA from the first year to your final year divided by the total number of years of study.
Let us look at an example of a final year CGPA.
Assuming a student studied a course of 4 years in the university, and his CGPA are as follows;
Level | CGPA |
100 | 3.70 |
200 | 4.45 |
300 | 3.80 |
400 | 4.30 |
Total | 16.25 |
Then the CGPA of such student from his first year till the final year is:
Final year CGPA= Total CGPA/4
Final year CGPA= 16.25/4= 4.06
The Final year CGPA of such student is 4.06.
The final year CGPA is used to determine if you are a First class, Second class upper, Second class lower, and Third class students.
For you to be the best in your class or one of the best students, you need to aim GPAs or CGPAs.
Now that you have known;
